Crusty Crampton

Harry ‘Crusty’ Crampton, well-known Rye Harbour fisherman, pictured outside the William the Conqueror in 1947. Born in 1877, he lived at Rye View with his wife Jane and her nine children from her previous marriage to fellow fisherman George Tiltman. After the Rye fishing fleet had been laid up or offered for sale in 1933, Harry Crampton claimed his boat Meteor was the last sailing trawler still operating.
