Bertie Downey
Bertie Downey (1881-1967), fisherman of Rye Harbour, pictured in 1956. Known as ‘Shirty’, he was one of seven children born to Stephen and Louisa Downey who lived at Sea View Cottage, next to the William the Conqueror. Stephen was a mariner and later a Trinity House Pilot. Bertie was a merchant seaman as a young man before spending the rest of his working life as a fisherman at Rye Harbour.
