William Drew Lucas-Shadwell
When it was decided to construct the Admiralty pier at Dover of concrete blocks, the contractors fixed on the large extent of beach or shingle at Rye Harbour as the most suitable place for their manufacture; and as this property belonged to Mr Lucas-Shadwell, he determined at once to erect a large clubroom, with dormitories for single men, and convenient offices, in order that no one employed on the works might be driven to the public house or beer shop for lodging or amusement.
