Shingle

... is the name for the mass of flint pebbles that Rye Harbour is built on. The flint pebbles come from within the chalk that once linked England and France. The Dungeness shingle system (including Rye Harbour) is the largest shingle feature in Europe. The pebbles here are browner than most other places and indicates the amount of weathering they have undergone.
