Hall and Co

Removing shingle from the shore, no wonder the shore has eroded in the last 100 years. Does anyone know where these photos are from, or guess the date?

Comments

In the early 1980's I researched the history of the extraction and concrete industries at Rye Harbour, as part of research into the history of railways in the area. I strongly suspect that this picture may date from post-WW2. I believe that Hall & Co started work at RH after the war and were extracting from the beach head in the early 'fifties, then moved to lagoon extraction in The Nook. One ex Simpson employee that I talked to said that, when he returned from the army, he found that Hall had taken over from Simpson - one of the first jobs he was given was to lift lots of ex-Simpson narrow gauge rail track, and send the track, wagons and locos to Hall's depot at The Crumbles in Eastbourne. If anyone remembers, or has photographs of, narrow gauge railways at rye Harbour or at the chemical works (South Eastern Tar Distillers, later ABCO), I would be very interested.
