Tom Pope says that the man in the foreground was the ferryman "Grandad Cutting" we think the passenger is the Vicar going to the service at Camber. Middle background is the Tram station.

The ferryman in the picture is James Charles Cutting also known as 'Chalkie'.

James Cutting is my husband Peter Chapmans great grandfather, his grandmother was Mat Cutting

My husbands grandmother was Freda May Cutting. His father was born in tram road and was John Chapman.

I believe my grandparents and father were living at rye harbour then, my father was only a youngster but he remembers the canvas ceiling flapping in the wind, Grandfather was Albert Brown Postman

My grandad owned rye harbour garage, I have many fond memories of all that worked for him.

The ferryman is my grandfather, my mother was Bessy cutting his daughter. I think the comments by Peter Chapman may be the son af my cousin John.

The man in the photo called James Charles Cutting is my greatgrandfather, my grandfather Frederick Walter Cutting was James Charles Cutting's son, who moved to Cornwall to marry my grandmother Mary Eliza Fancis. Henry, Albert and Robert cutting who lost their lives in the Mary Stanford Lifeboat disaster were first cousin to my granddad, would love to see more photos of the cutting family.
